Every public school student will graduate from high school, globally competitive for work and postsecondary education and prepared for life in the 21st Century. (Mission of the NC State Board of Education)
Instructions: On your poster board, as a group, draw what you imagine a 21st Century Learner would look like. What tools would they use every day? How would their lessons be taught to them? What would be some expectations of a 21st Century Learner?
Narrative: By definition: 1 to 1 learning involves one student, one computer, one interactive, personalized learning experience in a wireless environment with anytime access to the Internet (24 hours per day, 7 days per week) guided by highly qualified teachers and informed parents/guardians.
Activity 3a: What is Your Definition of 1 to 1
Type: Discussion Blog
Instructions: In your own words, define: What is 1:1 learning? Post responses to our Discussion Section.
1.04 - Why 1:1 Learning?
Narrative: Today's learners have grown up in a digital world with cell phones, computers, video entertainment, iPod technology, and the Internet. Students are hyper communicators, goal planners, multi-taskers, expert technologist, and active learners. Yet, students experience a huge disconnect every day when they walk into a classroom.
Activity 4a: Bridging the Disconnect
Type: Think, Pair, Share Activity
Materials: Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
Goal: To have participants to begin to process how 1:1 Bridges the Disconnect between the digital world of today's learners and the traditional settings of today's classrooms.
Instructions: THINK about today's classroom setting as it relates to that of an ideal 1 to 1 setting. PAIR with your Subject Partner to create a comparison and constrast slide using PowerPoint. Be prepared to SHARE your PowerPoint slide(s) with the group.
December 10, 2009 - "How did we do?"
Please take time to answer the following quick Evaluation Form about your experience on December 9, 2009. We really enjoyed getting you motivated and ready to go INNOVATE the minds of our students!!
Lesson 2 - The 1 to 1 Environment "A New Learning Ecology"
2.01 - A New Learning Ecology
Narrative: What is an Ecology?
An ecology is defined as the study of the interaction of a living organism and its environment.
Narrative: The key feature of 1:1 Instructional contexts is that each student and teacher has access to mobile learning technology device and the Internet. As a result of this initial access, students, and teachers have ready access to vast amounts of information and tools for communication, such as IM, E-mail, Desktopo Video Conferencing.
Activity 5a: Unlocking the Gateway...ACCESS ("Teachers Are No Longer the Gatekeepers of Classroom Information and Knowledge")
Type: Group Activity
Materials: Mobile Device and the Internet
Goals: To have participants discover the unleashing potential of ACCESS.
Note: Keep in mind that simply having access to information and tools does not necessarily mean that access will result in productive teaching and learning outcomes.
Instructions: Each Core, Elective, and CTE group will write down a revelant course topic to be researched and place "in the hat". Next, each group will then choose topics from "the hat". Each group will be responsible for finding a Video, Image, and Article on chosen topic. Finally, the group will type a short summary and post all information found to the wiki.
2.02 - What Does the 21st Century Classroom Look Like?
Narrative: Essential Components that are typically in a 21st Century Classroom. (Review the Word Document below).
POD Trainers will demonstrate the basic procedures to develop multimedia presentations
POD Participants will create a 5-7 Slide Presentation on a covered classroom element of their choice (i.e. Objective, Policy and Procedures, Class rules, etc)
Pay close attention to the Demonstration and Narrative. You will have a Formative Assessment to complete later in this Module.
Materials: Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
Instructions: Create a 5-7 Slide Presentation on a covered classroom element of your choice (i.e. Objective, Policy and Procedures, Class rules, etc -- Something that can be taken back and used). Make sure that you use the tips shared by your POD Trainers!
2.03 - Student Life in a 21st Century Classroom
Narrative:Through this 1:1 we hope to have classrooms that have an ASSESSMENTSYSTEM that informs instruction and evaluates knowledge, skills, performance and dispostions needed in this century. This system can be broken into two major parts: formative and summative.
Formative assessments occur during instruction, are not graded, are continuous, give descriptive feedback. They look like questioning, discussions, learning activities, conferences, interviews, and student reflections.
Summative assessments occur at the end of instructional unit, are graded, give evaluative feedback and occur periodically. They look like multiple choice, T/F questions, matching, short answer, fill in the blank, extended written response and performance assessments.
Activity 7a: Model Me (The Student)
Purpose: This Activity will:
Introduce the functionality of the CPS (Classroom Performance System)
Give POD Participants a real life feel of one of the readily available 21st Century Assessment Tools to use in their classrooms.
After this Activity:POD Participants will:
Understand how to encourage a lively whole-class interaction
View multiple reports in just seconds
Have an awareness on how to involve all students, not just the confident or outgoing
Manage both teacher-led and/or student-paced assessments.
What is The CPS? The Classroom Performance System is a dream come true for both student and teacher. This revolutionary tool combines interaction, assessment, and even a little entertainment to spawn productivity for any class that utilizes it! CPS embodies the future of classroom technology by way of a wireless response system that uses pads and an appropriate number of receivers to accomodate a class of any size.
Materials: CPS System
Instructions: POD Participants will complete a Formative Assessment using the "clickers" from the CPS. The assessment questions will be gathered from the Narrative of Lesson 2.02.
