\nThat being said, I must confess I too have some of the same fears as swestbrook89. I am one of the "fortunate" ones to be using curriculum that is designed according to the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT). This curriculum is "scripted" - specific activities are to be taught in a specific order without variation. Many of the activities are very open-ended and require students to use higher level thinking skills and draw conclusions. Perfect 21st century. The difficulties in my classes have been twofold.
\n1. Students are like the deer in the headlights when they have to use any critcal thinking skills.
\n2. Most of my students do not possess or have the ability to use the social skills needed for open-ended, group activities.

I worry that it will freak kids out as it gives them responsibility for their own learning. They are a "what's the right answer" culture, and they look constantly to us teachers not only for those answers but also for assurances that such answers exist. I worry that they won't be confident enough to assume such control. I also worry about the "answer key." I this reader-response approach to learning and education what we want?","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"18273767","body":"While I have never seen a 1-to-1 program where the goal is to give individual students laptops, I have had the opportunity to teach in a classroom with laptops. I found it to be a very positive experience and students were successful in guiding their own learning and gaining two skills at once. (Media literacy AND content knowledge.)
\n
\nI think that our students worry about the answer key because that is what they have been trained to expect. Our "old" educational model was built to prepare students for the industry and manufacturing sector. In that type of setting there is a right and wrong answer, but changes in technology have changed the demands for students. Jobs are now found in technology and service. Now students need to be able to think outside of the box, be flexible and understand that finding a different "answer" to the problem is acceptable and should be encouraged. Part of the problem IS that our students are not confident enough to assume control. That is why I believe it will take small steps and lots of encouragement, but this is part of what our students need to be successful in the 21st Century.
\n
\nThus, I believe this is exactly what we want. We want our students to learn to be responsible for their own learning, to have an education that prepares them for their careers and life, to be comfortable with a variety of technology and open ended questions, and finally to find value in their education. Will it freak students out at first? Sure, but so did electricity, the automobile, and the Internet, all things we now embrace.","dateCreated":"1261010542","smartDate":"Dec 16, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"janet_white","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/janet_white","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"18306813","body":"And the discussion continues...I really enjoyed how your definition opened the floor for a very enlightening discussion. For instance, teachers now will be guiding students through the material rather than lecturing and have the students regertitate what the teacher said. Teachers\u2019 will also present the material in a way that the students can relate to it and appeal to the different learning and cultrually generation stlyes of the students. Technology will be incorprated in one to one learning as well as other differentated instruction techniques such as raps. In order for one to one to work, I think that teachers will need to be re-trained so that they know how to and can impliment the student-centered learning model in their classroom b\/c if our teachers are not educated on how to make learning more student centered, all this hard work and money into the laptops that Vance County is doing will not be used as effectivtly as it could be and students will not reach their full potetnial. Also I think that cell phones should be incorporated into some of the lessons. If teachers do not have laptops for our students, many students have cell phones with internet connection that can be used in the classroom if expectations and rules are set up and are in place that encourages productive use and learning with the cell phones and other technologies like the ipod, laptops and mp3 players. Instead of discouraging these, we, as educators should encourage the use of these technologies, especially since we are adapting a one-to-one student centered learning environment.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"18307109","body":"Good Job Mark!
